CHARGE OF MURDER.

ACCUSED ACQUITTED ON GROUND

OF INSANITY,

Per Press Association. Auckland, last night

At the Supremo Court, Ani Nganiho Makara, a Maori woman, was charged with the murder of her infant child at Hokianga. When asked to plead she made no reply, but made a rambling statement as to the child’s religion. The Crown Prosecutor explained that the woman and child arrived at the Maori settlement, and was asked to stay. She refused at first, but returned later without the child, which was found dead in a swamp. Tho woman's mind was evidently unhinged at the time. The jury returned a verdict of acquittal on tho ground of insanity. The prisoner was discharged.
