Someone wrote to a Hobart paper the other day saying there were six men in the Tasmanian Legislative Council whose united a“es made 500 years. The President and the chairman of 'committees make up 170- years between them. John Dennistoun Wood, Barrister, elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1857, has just been elected a member of the Tasmanian Legislature for the district of which he is a nntive. He is 74 years of age, bat they like very old politioaus in Tasmania. Under the heading “Embarrassing Sympathy ” tho Westminster Gazette publishes another of F- Carrnthers Gould’s inimitable cartoons, of which Mr Seddon is the central figuio. The New Zealand Premier appears in the guise of an enormously stout batcher, with apron and all complete, standing in a shop which bears the title in large capitals, “ SEDDON,” and sbhws divers joints of New Zealand mutton duly displayed. The vast butcher is seen clasping Mr Chamberlain tightly to his breast, the face of the ex-Minister for the Colonies wearing much the same expression as it would were he undergoing a similar caress at the hands, or rather, paws, of a big bear. Underneath is appended tho following legend : Who with his frozen lamb to sell Straight ran to wire me when I fell, Who kissed the place to make it well My Seddon. Who when he saw the stream of gold Forth from the Mother Country rolled, Denounced the orime in aocents bold ? My Seddon.
