Topia To roe, one of tho principal Maori chiefs in Wanganui district, died on Monday. Deceased was aged over SO. He joined the King party on tho outbreak of tho Maori war, but subsequently went over to the colonial troops and rose to the vault of major. Ho went to England as one of the deputation to place before the Homo Government Native grievances.

Tirnaru, last night.

The A. and P. Association Show opened here to-day under unfavorable weather conditions, rain falling all tho morning. The entries this year constitute a record, being 697, as against 480 last year This is exclusive of implements, which provide a greater attraction than at any previous Tiuravu Show. Compared with last year the entries are as follows (figures for 1902 being given first): —Sheep, 187. 222; cattle, 21, 56 ; horses, 186, 219 ; dogs, 4, 20 ; pigs, 10, 23 ; produce, 72, 67.

Mr Carow, 8.M., gave judgment for Tl 5 and costs for plaintiff in a mining case, Vulcan Company v. Bell. Defendant ploadcd that his application for shares was withdrawn boforo the Company was formed.

Westport, last night. Arthur Conyngham was to-day further remanded til) November 4th on a charge of the wrongful conversion of £3 3s, the moneys of E. J. Zones, of Wellington. Counsel for the prosecution stated that 12 additional informations (six for false protonces and six for forgery of orders for books) had been laid, and were set down for the 4th prox. Accused was released on i£5Q bail.
