EAST COAST NEWS.
HICK’S BAY,
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
H.M.S. Penguin is new stationed at this bay for a month’s surveying, and the natives of this district are anxious to have a game of football with the Penguin’s men before they leave for South. The roads between Hick’s Bay and To Araroa have been almost completely carried away by the last heavy rains, The flood rose very high at Mr Brown’s mill, carrying away fences, etc., and many of the natives had to flee in the dead hour of the night. 'The river has changed very much. If the slips are not taken away on the roads beforo the next rains come there will be no road at all. I fancy the present Government load will havo to be changed, as in parts it is completely carried away, and it would cost too much to slice tho hills down for anothor track, as they are very stoep. I am convinced that an accident «ill- take place, and if so the ratepayers will have to “ pay the piper.” If a few men wore put on for a week they could remove the obstacles as it would not cost much. If they are not removed it will cost the Waiapu County Council a much larger sum.
