RIVER IMPROVEMENT.

(To the Editor Gisborne Times.

Sir, It is plainly seen the Turanganui rivor is now moro than ordinarily shallow, in fact the sand 13 above water mark for a long way along tho groin when tho tide is full back. The engineering skill is causing heavy exponse, and still tho river, except occasionally, remains shallow; yet none of the members appear to givo a suggestion that will remedy tho critical stato of things. I therefore venture to suggest what I think would bo a permanont remedy for keopiog the river clear of sand aud silt, viz.—open a gap in the breakwator pier, say about half a chain wide, so as to allow tho current of the river to to run out in its original natural course, and build a flood gate (as I suggested many years ago) at tho junction of tho Taruhoru und Waimata rivers—where Mr ( M. McLeod had his tram punt stationed. Open your gates, say two or three times a week at low water obb, and scour out the rivor, cut a channolfrom the Awapuni lagoon to tho Waikanao, aod allow that stream to run into the AwapuDi, and from there to tho sea; it will relieve you of the Waikanao trouble and also drain the cemetery at tho same time, tho expense would not amount to one half tho money spent on tho dredge, John Townlcy, aud tho river, and, could I venture to say, would bo far more beneficial. —I am, etc., i E. P. Joyce.
