PILFERING CARGO,
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night,
Pilforing of cargo on ccean-goiDg steamers is frequently reported, and with a view of affording an example of what will be dono to offenders in this way when they are detected, a sailor from the Papanui was to-day sentenced by the Stipendiary Magistrate to six months’ imprisonment for stealing four pairs of stockings and a pair of boots from the hold of the vessel. DIVORCE PROCEEDINGS.
The Chief Justice to-day granted a decree nisi in the divorce suit of Mary Barker v. Rawiri Rskatau, an aboriginal native of Waitotara. The applicant married respondent when sixteen years old, and ho lived with her for only a month. NEW ZEALAND BAND TOUR. Lieutenant Herd, bandmaster of the Now Zealand band that toured the United Kingdom, arrived by the Athenic to-day. On being interviewed he refused to speak on any of the contentious matters that have been raised in connection with the management and affairs of the band. He states that the tour had been a great musical success, and they were all sorry it had been financially a failure. ALLEGED MANSLAUGHTER. At Stratford Hutton, charged with killing Timothy O’Shea during a fight on October Ist, was today committed for trial. Morrison, one of the witnesses, voluntarily admitted his sole responsibility for tho disturbance which led to the fight) Bail was allowed.
