To-day being Labor Lay, Government offices and Banks will bo closed. The Sheridan Company make their last appearance at the Thoatro to night.

Mails which left Auckland via san Francisco on September 11th arrived in London on October tho 10th.

Mails which left Melbourne via Brindis 1 on September 9th arrived in London on October tho 10th. Tenders cluse at noon on Saturday for the supply of butter milk from the Poverty Bay Co-operative Company. Tenders close at noon on Friday for the extension of the present freezing chambers at the Taruheru Freezing Works. Owing to bad roads in the Wlran'garei district, settlers 1 are unable to get the milk to the creameries,, although the supply is plentiful.

At tho meeting of the Poverty Bay Bowing CUib last evening it was decided to approach tbe Gisborne BowiDg Club with a view to tho formal oponiDg of the rowing season in about a fortnight’s time. On Sunday last Mr j. D. Barrington, of To Karaka, had tbe misfortune to lose his handsome stallion Black Prince, which died suddenly. Engagements made with owners for the service of marcs are in consequence cancelled. At the Police Court yesterday, William Hinton was fined 5s and costs for drunkenness, and on the graver charge of indency accused was fined £1 and costs, in default of payment four days’ imprisonment. George Palmer, charged with drunkenness and refusing to loave the Coronation Hotel, was fined £1 5s and costs, in default four Jays’ imprisonment. Mr J. Stevenson, of tho firm of Messrs E. Stevenson and Co., of Palmoraton North, is at presont in this district buying half and full draught horses, It will be remembered that this well-known firm had the contract for tho purehaso of Imperial remounts in this splony during the Boer war. Already ■ Messrs Stevenson and Co. have taken four mobs .of horses from Poverty Bay district, for which top prices have been received by farmers. By reference to our advertising columns it will bo seen that this firm are prepared to purchase any number of half and full draught horses.

At a meoting of the Committee of th e Gisborne Racing Club, the programme fo r tho Summer meeting, to bo held in February next, was decided on. It will be seen that it is much on the lines of that of last year. The ntafees have boon increased by £lls, and the .selling races have been struck out. The Flying, Park Stakes, and Electric Handicap have been raised to 50 sovs each, tba Grandstand Handicap to 75 sovs, and tho Summer ■ Handicap to 100 sovs. There is a County Stakes of 40 sovs each day, Hurdlo Races of 00 and GO sovs, and Hack and Welter Handicaps of 25 sovs comprising tho smallest slakes offered. ,

At the Council ipeetiiig last night, Cr Johnston made a strong advocacy of a by-law compelling owners of property to provide two tanks for each household. After some discussion the matter was deferred. During the discussion,' Cr Morrison suggested that provision should be mado .according to the number of occupants of a house, but tlie Mayor pointed .cut that that might lead to owners of houses giving preference to newly-married couples, and debarring families. Cr Harding thought there should be a 200-gallon tank for ievery room, while Cr Hepburn considered there should be a 400-gallon tank for every room.

Tho fortnightly meeting of the Star of Gisborne Lodge was held last evening, when thero was an exceptionally large attendance. Bro. Small, New Zealand Grandmaster of the Order, was present, and gave an excellent address on the work of Oldfellowship throughout tho jyorld, and also on tbo membership and capital of tho Order. He complimented tho officers and members of tho Lodge on its phenomenal growth. During the evening five now members were initiated and twenty-four proposed. After the conclusion of business an excellent supper was enjoyed, and a few hnurs were devoted to harmony. Bro. Small ae?t visits the Opotiki Lodge.
