MOTU NOTES.
(By Our Own Correspondent.)
For the past .week the weather has been wet and wintry, thus bestirring the mud on the road..
I hear, on reliable authority, that we are to have a bi-weekly coach service between here and Te Karaxa, .which .will commence next month. This should, prove a boon to settlers.
I not ce the Government • has just had erected a little cottage and ofliice in the township. The contractors were Messrs Hansen Bros., who have completed their work in a satisfactory manner., There still exists a land hunger—at least, it seems so here, as last 'Luesday Messrs F. Phillips, F. Lucas, and W. McKay arrived here from Feiid-ing (Manawatu Uidtrict), in search of'land'. The latter gentleman has secured 900 acres of Crown land at the hack of the Mobu Hotel. 1 also hear that Mr 11. M. Porter has sold his property at 'a satisfactory figure. Others are contemplating sales, which I must not refer to at present. At Raxaroa last Friday, a very large number of persons put in an appearance for the plain and fancy dress ball, especially, so considering the- very bad state of the weather. Visitors were present from W'hakarau, Motu, and Gisborne, and the whole snow, was a complete ttuccess. The prize for the best fancy dress fell to Miss Beaufoy, wnile the honor for men’s dress fell to> Master Beaufoy, as “-Lord Nelson.” An accident -occurred at Richmond ("Victoria) resulting in the death of a little girl named Margaret Owen, aged five years, and the serious injury of her little brother. The children were playing near a newlyerected brick wall,,, when it suddenly collapsed and buried them. The girl died a lew, minutes after being released, and the boy is now in the Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.
