CHRISTCHURCH NEWS.
Per Press Association. Christchurch, last night. George McCombe was sentenced to five years' imprisonment at the Supremo Court this morning on two charges of forgery at Temuka.
In Banco this morning there was heard an appeal by Piteaithlev and Co. against the decision of Mr Haselden, S.M., directing them to pay £25 damages to LThaeker, for refusing to carry him from Lyttelton to Okain’s Bay for the usual faro of ss. Thacker was hostile to the particular line, and was charged £l. On refusing during the journey the boat put back with Thacker and landed him again at Lyttelton. The case turns on whether the boat was a common carrier of passengers by water. Owing to the decision of the Minister of Education not to grant an application for conversion of one of the city schools into a district high school, over sixty ssholars who have passed through the city primary schools are at present attending the Lyttelton District High School, froe passes on the railway being granted them. It is anticipated when this fact is more widely known that the number will largely increase. The Education Board to-day decided to ask the Canterbury members to again approach the Minister on the subject of allowing the West Christchurch school to be converted into a district high school.
