It was decided to place a grant for the road oo the schedule, of votes required for the district to bo forwarded to toe Governm Mr Howard Kenway _ waited on the Council and asked for assistance to repair the Huanui and Kiore roads. In reply to Cr Matthews the Chairman said the Council had no power to spend money on private roads. Mr Kenway said the roads had been made under the supervision of the Council. So far they had not cost the Council anything. He admitted that the roads only lead to the stations, but thoy were necessary for tho stations. , Ho estimated the cost of clearing the slips at ;£SO to -670. The Chairman said the Council had no monoy, and the road was not a public road. A warning was given when the loan was granted that the Council would not maintain the roads. Mr Kenway said tho stations paid rates and interest on the loan, but got nothing in return. , Cr Murphy: You hsve the road. Other settlers aro in the same position. Mr Konway : Two blacks do not make a white. In reply to the Chairman, ho said if he remembered rightly tho Council had made some expenditure for repairs on the roads. . Cr Murphy ; Then you have received monoy you avo not entitled to. Mr Konway: Perhaps tho Council will
want a refund. _ j It was decided to deal with Mr Ken- | way’s request when the estimates came up. _ _ The Tolago Bay Cemetery Board, per Mr W. B. Holder, asked (to have about £l2 expended, in metalling (*a portion of Ferneaux street from the corner of Foster and Ferneaux streets to the cemetery. The metal was handy, and as tho road was mostly a sand drift it was difficult to got along whon a burial took place. Or Murphy said he was proposing to put £4,0 on the estimates for the north side of Tolago township. The Chairmun said it seemed disgraceful that the cemetery could not be reached, and on his motion it was resolved to grant the request. The G.P.O-, Wellington, forwarded a statement showing the revenue and expenditure on account of the Karaka telephone. The Clerk stated the Council was in credit some £l7. Mr A. Hickford, Motu, asked for further information regarding his previous letter to the Council as follows : “Is it necossary to take a vote of the whole .of the ratepayers of Cook County for the construction of a tramway lino, or just the ratepayers affected by the use or construction of the lino ?” He had been instructcd.by outside “ brokers ” to secure tramway line rights to Motu, also all timber rights in the Motu district, after which his full scheme of milling the Motu forests and steam tramway line would become public property. The Clerk said he had quoted the section of tho Tramways Act dealing with the question asked, which should satisfy Mr Hickford. Cr Clayton: I understand Mr Rees scheme dealt with tho land in the vicinity of Karaka and Whatatutu. The Chairman : Wo should give every possible information to such a man. He is a public benefactor if he does what he proposes. Tho Engineer’s estimates for the maintenance of tho roads for tho ensuing year (published in the Times) were considered. On the motion of Cr Matthews, it was decided to cut the estimates down by £IOOO. ... The estimates were dealt with seriatim.
Tendors were dealt with as follows ! Constructing depot platform at Patutahi quarry : J. Nicol <£34, M. McLeod i 27 7s 6d, Baynes 10s. Baynes’ tender was accepted. For formation and clearing Mangatu river road one tender was received, from Mr Donnehy. It was decided that if the tender was for the lower amount mentioned that it bo accepted ; if for the higher, that frosli tendors he Galled. Mr Donnehy afterwards informed the Council his tender was for the higher amount.
