PAYMENTS TO TEACHERS.

Si r) —The members of the Hawke's Bay Institute at their recent meeting passed a resolution “ That a Statement of the institute’s complaints, with tho Board’s reply, _ be published in the local press.” It js evident they have thought better of it and havo declined to publish tho Board’s reply. I shall, therefore, he obliged if you will supply the deficiency.—l am, etc., Thos Tanner, Chairman.
Institute’s Complaints, with Replies by Education Board’s Secretary, Adopted by Board as SATISFACTORY. Complaint. —l. Miss Marsh, Makotuku, on sick leave for month of May. Received no pay. Reply.—She has received one month’s siek allowance. 2. Mr Plank relieved at Elsthorpe for the month of February, 1902. He was paid LlO 11s 6d, or LI2G 18s per year. The salary for the school. at that time was L 137. This deduction purely arbitrary, as it is less than 10 per cent. Mr Plank was paid salary at £l4l per annum, £ll 15s, less 10 per cent., £1 3s 6d—£lo 11s 6d. 3. Miss M’Clure relieved at Hastings from March Bth to July 17th this year and was paid L 9 3s 4d per month, 10 per cent, being deducted on account of certificate, though the department specifies no particular certificate for the position, and deducts only in the case of head teachers.
