A conference of representatives of Cooporativo Socioties and Trades Unionists of Wales and Monmonthshire, held at Cardiff, representing a membership of 138,000, resolved that Mr Chamberlain’s proposals would bo a burden to workers, hamper industry, create capitalistic monopolies, and cause international and Colonial discord. '& conference of tho South and East England Federation Trades Council, hold at Oxford, resolved that any departure from Freetrado would be detrimental to tho workors’ best interests.

Mr Chamberlain, replying to an Aidershot correspondent, said that ho had resigned in tho hope of continuing tho cause whoroto ho had devoted himsolf at the time of the Home Rule struggle. There was a difference in regard to what was now at stako —tho Union of Empire—whilo then it was tho Union of tho United Kingdom.
