THE NEW GOVERNORGENERAL.
A cable message has been received to the effect that Lord Northcote, the Governor of Bombay, India, who has been appointed to succeed Lord Tennyson as Governor-General of the Commonwealth, sails for Australia in November, and assumes office iu December. English newspapers state that the appointment has given general satisfaction. Besides his social gifts and his personal advantages, his training has been an excellent preparation for his now post, and his ripe experience and tactful political sympathy will be valuable in a free and democratic federation. Such is the opinion of the English newspapers. His father was a well-known figure in British politics, as Sir Stafford Northcote and later on as Lord Iddlesleigh. Lord Northcote entered the Foreign Office as a clerk, and was private secretary to the late Lord Salisbury, and later to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. In 1890, lie entered the House of Commons in the Conservative interest, and remained there till, in 1899, he was appointed Governor of Bombay. Mr Chamberlain sent a communication to Lord Tennyson, stating that the appointment was contemplated, and asking whether it would he acceptable ; and he added that Lord Northcote’s tenure of office at Bombay had been attended with remarkable success. A favorable reply was sent by Lord Tennyson, and this w T as followed by the announcement of tlio appointment.
