The Times states that a good many soldiers in Ladysmith contend that the actual execution of the naval guns was a good deal less than that of the two obsolete howitzers from Port Elizabeth. Increasing tariffs compelled Thomas Firth and Sons, of Sheffield, to purchase Salamander works at Riga, to retain and develop trade with Russia. The new works cover forty acres, and include crucibles, t iomen’s furnaces, hammers, and rolling mills. The disaster at Soawfell was the first accident which has occurred to roped climbers in England. The victims were ascending -Tawfoll Pinnacle during a heavy wind. Enquiries addressed by Sir E. Barton to the Pacific Cable Board, on the question of whether a conference was still desired, and other points arising out of the conference between Mr Barton and Mr Reynolds, have been dealt with by the Board, which is reticent in regard to the reply sent.
Buda Pesth, Sepf. 23. Seven relatives constituting the Village Council of Peager, in Hungary, sold a forest and appropriated part of the proceeds. When the fraud was discovered they committed suicide. Berlin, Sept. 23. The German press are irritated over American negotiations in Abyssinia for commercial treaties. Sydney, Sept. 24, The House sat until 11.30 a m., discussing the Premier’s motion for leave to introduce a Bill to take a referendum on the subject of introduction of members. The motion was agreed to and the Bill read a first time. The House then adjourned. Melbourne, Sept. 24. A motion iu the Senate in favor of a referendum on the fiscal question being taken at the next senatorial election was negatived by sixteen to five. The proposal for a joint sitting of the House and Senate to deal with the site for the capital was carried in the House, and the resolution sent on to the Senate.
