The Standard states that a makeshift Ministry will not dispel the chilling apprehensions which overhang industry, and retard the long-expected revival of financial activity. It urges Mr Balfour to appoint ad- I ministrators of undoubted force and commanding reputation. The King on Saturday sent a special messenger for Lord Milner. _ Mr William O’Brien, speaking at Cork, said that the Nationalists hold aloof from the present crisis, and await the best offer. Home Rule was I much nearer than was imagined.
Scores of cablegrams have reached the Colonial Office, expressing sympathy and admiration for Mr Chamberlain, especially from Canada, South Africa, and New Zeland. Mr Seddon’s two messages attract attention.
A correspondent in the Times quotes Mr John Morley’s Life of Cobden to show that Mr Morley in 1881 recognised the necessity of some method of inducing foreigners to lower hostile tariffs.
The Indian press is exceedingly hostile at Mr Brodrick’s rumored successorship to Lord George Hamilton. A Unionist is opposing the latter at Ealing.
