SUSPICIOUS MESSAGE.

(Per Press Association.) Invercargill, last night. The other day Mr Kirkers found a bottle on tho beach a Otara, Fortrose, containing scraps of a Wellington paper, wrapped round a leaf of a pocket diary for 1901, on which was written in pencil : “To Father Boyne, Jackson’s Bay: Open Bay Island, Tuesday, 4th June. Here Vsince Sunday; all well. Very tired of long delay. Trust that Providence will have mercy on us.—Bishop Grimes, Dean Foley, Pere Sepety and Malon. Full of hope in the Lord.” The finder has doubts of the authenticity of tho writing, but Bishop Grimes and a party were visiting the western side of the diocese about that time. They - wero a long time unheard from, and suffered inconvenience. Indoed but tho other day His Reverence, writing to Westland, said that never again would ho run the risks he experienced. Tho scraps of papers have reference to General Colville’s failure in tho Cape campaign to purchase remounts for South Africa, so that all tho documents are in order chronologically. The bottle fiuder says that it smelt strongly of vinegar, and the surface was much worn by rolling on sand. Open Bay islands are a few miles north of Jackson’s.
