THE NIWARU.

Per Press Association. Auckland, last night. The damage to the s.s. Niwaru has been found to be more extensive than at first estimated. Twenty shell plates have been removed, some being 25ft in length, also about 30 floor plates and frames. The rudder was unshipped, and was found to be twisted. It has been a stupendous job. The windlass was found to be broken. When the tail-end shafts were drawn the starboard bush and stern tube were found to be fractured, necessitating a casting of over three tons in weight and a separate contract of £SOO. The original contract was £6420, and in addition dock dues are £56 per day. The work is carried on throughout the 24 hours, and is expected to be complete within the contract time, 42 days.
