HONOR FOR AN AMBULANCE VETERAN. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night,
Mr W■ B Fisher received word by the ’Frisco mail that he had been elected a member of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and his Majesty had been pleased to approve of the appointment. The decoration is conferred in recognition of fourteen years’ service on behalf of the St. John’s Ambulance Association at Dunedin and Wellington, and Mr Fisher has been notified that a royal patent under the seal of the Order is on the way to the colony. ORCHARD AND GARDEN PESTS BILL.
A deputation of fruitgrowers waited on the Minister of Agriculture last night, and strongly supported the Orchard and Garden Pests Bill. They suggested the opening of a Government experimental orchard, and as an incentive to fruit-canning asked that machinery necessary for this work, which can only be obtained in America, should be admitted duty free. The Minister said the Orchard and Garden Pests Bill must pass, and promised to consider the other matters.
