LODGING-HOUSES AND BATHS.

The following letter was read at tlu> Borough Council last night “In reference to your notice regarding baths for boarders, 1 beg .to inform you that for this last four months I have had only one regular hoarder ; the rest, are day hoarders; who sleep out. I therefore fail to see that a bathroom is needed for one man. I sometimes let beds to strangers for one night, whose business takes them away before breakfast ;■! don’t know whether you would class him as a hoarder 1 I do not take in at any time more than fcu>- or five regular boarders. I keep the rest of the beds for men who Slav a night or so—men who have a strong objection to hotels. Why I should have to put a bath room on another man’s property js a conundrum for me. . I should think that the landlord is the one •Ret at for sanitary matters-not the noor unfortunate slave who runs t hast -house. If any of the gentleof the Council should think that I am nicking a fortune ty suppling 28 meals and beds per week at lbs no drub.'-they will be to hoar that this business is for sale at the price of furniture and natures! or, if the Council should care to run it as a municipal lodging house. I shall be most happy to come to terms—l am, etc., M. .u. >B ISA VIS.” , , The Mayor slated that as the b> law to compel the providing of such baths had not yet come into cUcct, nothing further could he done at prefer Lvsnar said it should he made clear that it was to the landlords, and not to the tenants, that wic Council looked in the matter. The question as to whether any Councillor desired to invest in _ the business, or to start a municipal lodging-house, was facetiously alluded to,'' but even the •* price of furniture and fixings ” would not tempt Councillors.
