The box-plan for the Hawtrey Company will bo opened at Miller’s at 10 o'clock this morning. At 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon, East Cape reported: “ The schooner Awanui has passdd south, with a light breeze.” His Honor Judge Cooper was accompanied on the Bench yesterday morning by Miss Cooper, who acts as her father’s private secretary. It will be seen from Mr Ellerbeck’s chaEge of advertisement that “ Baby Day” at the Elierbeck Studio is fixed for 16th September, when the Studio will doubtless be besieged by “ little cherubs.” The chief attraction in town this afternoon and evening will bo the Gisborne Horticultural Spring Flower and Bulb Show. As many growers are contributing exhibits a very pretty and interesting show is expected, Mr A. Monnie, of the Auckland firm of Messrs Mennie and Day, is at present visiting Gisborne. Being unable to visit country districts, by advertisement in another column ho invites storekeepers to inspect his samples at the Masonic rooms.
Yesterday Mesdames Townley, Scott> and Maynard, the Committee of the Hospital concort held last Thursday, paid over to Mr T. Coleman (Secretary of the Hospital), the sum of £37 2s, being the net result of the concert. This, with Government subsidy, will amount to over £BO. At the Supreme Court yesterday morning, Thomas Hatche, W. H. Tucker, and 0. Hansen were each fined 40s for failing to attend the second panel of po.mmon jurors, but subsequently they attended and explained that they were under a misapprehension. His Honor considered the explanations satisfactory, and remitted the fines. The Old English Fair which the Salvation Army intend holding in the Academy of Music next week, commencing on Tuesday evening, promises to be the most attractive gathering of the kind held in Gisborne. There ore to be twelve to fifteen stalls for each of which special scenery is being painted by Mr A. Catherall, who has already made good headway with the work. Each evening there will be an attractive musical programme. Full particulars will be givon in a later issuo. The firm of Messrs Mennie and Dey, of Auckland, are noted throughout the colonies for the excellence of their confectionery, the quality of the goods being far superior, to the imported article. The firm have built up a large wholesale business in Auckland, and spare no pains to give satisfaction to their numerous customers. This week Mr A. Mennie is visiting Gisborne, and is showing a choice assortment of goods at the Masonic sample rooms, where town apd country storekeepers are invited to inspect the same.
A considerable umouut of interest is 1 being taken in the Bible-io-schools movement throughout the colony. This evening at the Theatre Royal a large attendance is expected, when the matter will be fully discussed. Addresses will be given by a number of prominent speakers, and we are asked to state that tbo promoters of the meeting are anxious to have a free platform and invffij discussion from the opponents of the proposal. The successful competitors in the recent competition will be presented with prizes this ovening. Mr A. Tanfield, a member of tbe Auckland firm of Messrs Tanfield, Potter and Co., is at present visiting Gisborne with a grand assortment of samples of crockery and glasswar/Jj which are at present on view at the Masonic sample rooms. Town and country storekeepers are invited to inspect the same at the rooms, kXessrs Tanfield, Potter and Co. have one of the largest glassware businesses in the colonies, and customers can rely ou obtaining goods from the best manufacturers. As time does not permit tbe representative visiting the country, Mr Tanfield extends a special invitation to country storekeepers to inspect his show of samples. Ai the Rugby Union meeting last night the long-delayed decision was received on the protest lodged by the Kaiti-City Club against the match won by-Huia on August Bth, on the ground that the referee (Mr TV. S. McCredie) had awarded a try to Kaiti-City and had afterwards reversed his decision on finding that a line-umpire’s flag was up before the try was scored. I The local Union, od the matter coming I before them some weeks ago, decided to dismiss th_e protest, but the Kaiti-City Club decided to appeal to the New Zealand Union. The decision of the governing body was received last night, and was to the effect that the referee was wrong in reversing his decision, and that the only way out of the difficulty was to play the match over again. It was decided that West End and Kaiti-City meet on Saturday next, Huia and Kaiti-City deciding the disputed match on the Saturday following. This is the second time this season the Huia Club has had victory reversed through a wrong ruling by the referee.
Okitu bacon is winning golden opinions on the local and colonial markets. A small lad is required for Okitu butter factory. A gents’ bicycle in good order is offered for sale for five pounds. “ lolanthe ” orchestral practice this evening. A furnished cottage is required foi a few months. The Poverty Bay Farmers’ Club hold a smoke concert on the 2Gth. ,A practical and capable man advertises for position as station manager, or would work on shares. On the Matawhero School re-opening yesterday morning, it was found that over half the total number of scholars were still absent through measles, and it was therefore decided to.close the school for another week. A meeting of the Liberal Association will be held In tho Masonic sample rooms this evening at 8 o’clock. Amongst other matters the question of the East Coast district being more prominently brought forward as a resort for tourists will be dealt with. Owing to the heavy sale of Assets Board properties negotiated during tho past few weeks, the Assets Board has decided to hold a sale of stock at Morriusville on September 30th, when some thousands of sheep and cattle will be offered. Morrinsville is conveniently situated with regard to train service, being the junction of To Aroha and Rotorua railways. The sale affords an excellent opportunity to farmers on the East Coast and Opotiki districts to add to their stock, some of the sheep and cattle to be offered being exceptionally well bred. The sale will be conducted by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company and Messrs McNicol and Co. The Academy of Masic was last evening the scene of an attractive gathering on the occasion of the annual entertainment held in connection with the Gisborne Mutual Improvement Society. Tho hall was most tastefully decorated with Hags, bunting, and foliage, whilst there was a plentiful supply of attractive literature and photographs, Songs were contributed by Misses Faubort and McKay, and Messrs Teat, Raymond, East, and Owen, whilst an excellent recitation was given by Mr Jarman, The Italian string band udded considerably to tho enjoyment sf tho gatboring, and during the evening played a number of choice selections, which were much appreciated. A comedietta, entitled 11 Tlie Area Belle,” was must successfully staged, the characters being ably sustained by Miss Wallace as Mrs Oroker, Miss Georgeson as Penelope, Mr Shoridau as Constable Pitcher, Mr Elierbeck as Walker Chalks, a : milkman, and Mr H. H. Armstrong as Tosser, agrenadier, The accompaniments were played by Mrs Baty, Mr C. East, and the Italian Band. An excellent supper [ was provided by Mrs Erskine, who was s assisted by the members of the Committee. Special mention should be made of the services of Mr HrH. Armstrong, the Society’s ’ secretary,' who was untiring in his efforts to promoto tho success of the gathering.
