A MAGNIFICENT STRUGGLE, COMMENTS OF AUSTRALIAN PRESS. By Telegraph. Press Association. Copyright Sydney, Sept. 14. The weather is fine for the races. Cruiciform has been allotted 10.2 in the Squatters’ Handicap. The Daily Telegraph says Mr Stead must have boon proud to soo his colors so generously received on Saturday. Two of the best mares iu the Southern Hemisphere provided a contest worthy of their great reputation. After a magnificent struggle, during which excitement was probably roused higher than ever before, Cruciform got the judge’s verdict by a head. Then the excitement burst bonds. The crowd burst into loud and prolonged cheering. Volume after volume was given for Cruciform and her owner. Cruciform was a non-favorite, so the compliment paid Mr Stead was all the more flattering and genuine. Wakeful was not forgotten, for Bhe only succumbed after the gamest struggle, but excuses made for her defeat were not really admitted. The Herald says the interests surrounding the Derby at Epsom are naturally keen, but it remained for the meeting of Wakeful and Cruciform to rouse the spectators to the the highest pitch of excitement, and when after a magnificent struggle, which will live iu the memories of those privileged to witness it, the New Zealand representative gained the honors by the very narrowest of margins, thero followed a most remarkable demonstration, which formed not only an expression of general admiration of Cruiciform’e*»Bterling performance, but a tribute of honor to a true sportsman in the person of Mr Stead. The Tod Sloan style of riding adopted by Hewitt, though not attractive, appears very effective, and but for his superb horsemanship, particularly when Wakeful drew alongside Cruciform, the positions would probably have been reversed. Received, 5.7 p.m., Sept. 14 Sydney, Sept. 14. There is fine weather and a good attendance.
