The Auckland Herald’s Whangarei correspondent telegraphed •on Friday : Natives passing through from the North report that preparations are being made by Natives near Kaikohe for trouble if certain lands are put through the Court. The present occupier, Kauau, and party are, it is said, determined to fight if their rights are n any way disputed. It is reported that they have plenty of powder and arms, although they have not much provisions. To-day Inspector Cullen and about a dozen constables passed through on their way north to look into this matter. It is rumoured in Wellington that the leading licensed victuallers and brewers are negotiat ng with a well-known local business man to act as organiser for “ the trade.” It is proposed that he shall travel about the colony and consolidate the interests of those interested in the liquor traffic both privately and on the public platform, if thought necessary.
