BIG LOSS OF WAGES. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright* LONDON, Sept. 9. ■The loss of wages through the late stoppage of the tinplate workers of South Wales was £25,000. The Tracies Union Congress at Leicester briefly discussed and condemned almost unanimously Mr Chamberlain’s tariff policy as most mischievous and dangerous. ■ The Cougress endorsed a policy of direct labor representation in Parliament.
COMMERCIAL PROSPERITY. LONDON, Sept. 9. The Board of Trade statistics for the first six months of the current year have been published, and indicate a probaMe commercial prosperity in most of tho great States of the world. DIR CHAMBERLAIN IN REPLY. LONDON, Sept. 9. Mr Chamberlain, replying to an Invercargill correspondent, declared that he does not intend to propose a tax on land values in order to provide old age pensions. COTTON OPERATIVES MIGRATING to Canada. LONDON, Sept. 9. Many Lancashire cotton operatives have migrated to Canada, as the result of the slackness in the cotton goods trade.
THE CANAL. NEW YORK, Sept. 9. Colombia now asks twenty million dollars for the Isthmian canal concession, and one hundred thousand dollars from the Canal Company, also one-fourth more premium after the lapse of every century. There is excitement at Bogata owing to rumors that America intends to assist Panama to become an independent republic, with a view of carrying out tho original canal treaty. THE PACIFIC CABLE. MELBOURNE, Sept. 10. Mr Reynolds, general manager of the Pacific cable, informed a Chamber of Commerce deputation that the Board is taking steps to gain all facilities enjoyed by those using the Eastern route. The Pacific cable was being equipped with the best automatic instruments for use in an emergency to carry the whole of the traffic of Australia. The traffic so far had been up to the estimate. The manager stated tnat he had received a cable from London stating that the Board anxiously desired a conference between the partners to the agreement. LOSSES BY DROUGHT. SYDNEY, Sept. 10. The Premier estimates that the State during the past two years lost ten million pounds through drought.
