The City Vali (magistrate) confessed to the Consuls his inability to check the Moslem fanaticism.
One version of the Adrianople massacre is that the Tort fired on insurgents attacking an outpost. A panic followed, and the populace assailed the Christians. Another version is that a Turkish officer tried to; enter a Bulgarian house. The resistance offered excited the Moslem soldiers and Bashi Bazouks who attacked the Bulgarian quarter. Krushevo is strewn with dead,, who have been stripped naked. The people are afraid to bury the 'bodies, lest by doing so the suspicion of the Turks be incurred.

There is growing restlessness and excitement in Belgrade} and Sofia owing to the atrocities marking the suppression of the rising in Monastir district, where the Turks have the upper hand. Ninety women and children in one ■building at Kushivo were cut to pieces and thrown into the street. The heads of sixteen 1 merchants were carried on poles at Monastir. While troops were repelling an attack at Tcherkcstpi, between A.drianople and Constantinople, Circassian inhabitants went and massacred the occupants of three Bulgarian villages in the vicinity.
