The first coal from the State mine at Port Elizabeth has been brought to Wellington, half a ton being received at the Parliamentary Buildings. Some of it was burned in the fireplace in the lobby. It burned brightly and steadily, and gave out plenty of heat. The remainder of the sample was tested in the cooking ranges at Bellamy’s. Mr E. M. Smith, who, although an iron expert, is also an authority on coal, expressed the opinion that the cool was a splendid one, the best and clearest he had seen in New Zealand. The coal was also excellent for smelting.
