HOSPITAL SOCIAL.

A RECORD GATHERING,

It was a happy idea that the Hospital Trustees hit upon when they decided to have a social in aid of the funds of the institution, and the liberal response made by the public last evening was even greater than was anticipated by the most sanguine members of the Board. The Trustees were fortunate in being able to seoure Messrs Williams and Kettle’s wool stores for tho social, and as it was all ready decorated for the Military Ball this expense was also saved. Every member of the community who was approached to assist in rogard to the function expressed his or her readiness to do so, and as everything practically was given, the funds of tho institution are likely to benefit to the extent of two or three hundred pounds, the amount raised being entitled to the Government subsidy. The attendance last evening constituted a record for the district, there being being between 350 and 400 couples present. Before half past nine 750 persons had been admitted to the building, and not a few dropped in later in the evening. The scene whilst dancing was going on wa3 an animatod and attractive ono, tho gay dresses of tho ladies blending most harmoniously with the general docorationß. Never before in Gisborno have so many dancers been seen on the floor at the one time, and although at the commencement there was a little overcrowding, as the evening woro on and some of tho elder folk disappeared, there was ample room to get round. Tho music was supplied by Mrs Fernandez’s baud, who generously donated haif their fee to tho The supper, which was supplied by the ladies of the district, was of a most recherche order. There was a plentiful supply of the choicest viands for all, and tho arrangements made by tho committee of ladies were all that could bo desired. The ladies’ committee comprised Mesdames Townley, McP le, Wallis, Kennedy, Maynard, Hardk nd Nolan. A source of great attractio os the refreshment booth, which wi under the supervision of Messrs Allen >s., of the City Buffet. A small charg vas made for the drinks disposed at the ooth, and by this means a goodly sum v obtained towards the funds of the hospi Another source of income was obtains from the sale of buttonholes, a nutnbe if young ladies being engaged in this dir jion, and the returns were most encouragmg. The programme consisted of eighteen dances, and the favorite pastime was continued until about one o’clock this morning, when all went home in a happy frame of mind Where so many ladies and gentlemen assisted towards the success of the social it would be invidious to mention anyone in particular, and on thabaccount we refrain from doing so.
