EAST COAST NEWS

.TOKOMARU BAY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Some adverse fate attends the day ap pointed for the North v. South Footbal Match. The match has now been put oi twice owing to the inclemency of th weather. It is now arranged to play th match next Saturday, weather permitting The social gathering arranged by Messri Kelley and Buchanan came off on Thurs day evening at Mr Kolley’s new residence This building when completed will b( quite an ornament to our township, anc Mr and Mrs Kelley may well be proud of their new home, the workmanship re. fleets credit upon Mr J. Perry, the builder, The ping-pong match, between Messrs Kelley and Buchanan, was watched with keen interest, and resulted in a comparatively easy win for the former. Mr Kelley’s steady and consistent practice all the winter makes him quite a champion at the game. The cricket committee sprang a surprise upon the gathering by presenting a cricket bat to Mr Kelley for his batting performance of last season, his average being 14.87. The bat was proI sen ted by Mr F. Williams, President of the Club. Tho presentation was made in a few well chosen remarks by Mr W. Oates, secretary of the Club, who stated that sport in general owed much of its success to the employers who were always willing not only to subscribe to the funds of the different clubs, but to lot off their employees to play when required, were this not so some of the clubs could not exist. Mr and Mrs Kelley provided refreshments, and a very pleasant evening was brought to a close. Mr Kelley stated that he intended to again ask all his friends to a similar gathering when his house was finished. Mr McGavin, in his usual charasteristic manner, on behalf of all present, thanked Mr and Mrs Kelley for their hospitality. Dr Davis paid his regular visit to Tokornaru on Tuesday last, and the Chairman of the District Shool Committee, Mr Fairlie, arranged to have the school children vaccinated, but owing to the stormy weather a number were absent, however, the doctor vaccinated 12 of the children, and an effort is to be made to get Tokomaru gazetted as a place for public vaccinations. If this is done there will oe a chance ,of the law being carried out with regards to Native children as well. It is now upwards of twenty years since the Government sent Dr Scott along the Coast to vaccinate the Natives, and no Natives have been vaccinated here.

To vaccinate the few Europeans would bo of little use if there were to be an out break of small-pox, while almost the whole Native population are unvaccinated.
