EMPIRE'S TRADE.
THE COBDEN CLUB. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, Aug. 18. Tha Cobden Club declined Sir Howard Vincent’s challenge on behalf of tho United Empire Trade League, to discuss the country’s fiscal policy unless tho discussionwas restricted to Mr Chamberlain's proposed tax on food to givo pvoforence to tho colonies. Sir Howard Vincent replied that be knew nothing of such a proposal. Mr Chamberlaiu made a casual observation in tho House of Commons that the Cobden Club feared a debate, and sought to create prejudice, aud had proved itself a political organisation, run in Radical and disintegrating interests. A manifesto against Mr Chamberlain’s scheme, signed by fourteen Professors of Economy, bas been issued, and has resulted in an animated correspondence on the subject in tho Times. '
