BARQUENTINE AND PADDLE STEAMER IN A GALE.
(Per Press Association.) I AUCKLAND, last night. ! The crew of the barfjfientine Pendle Hill, which vessel left this port in tow of the p.s. Awiarua, for Mercury Bay on Thursday night, had an exciting experience. A] north-c,ast-erly gale was blowing with' gr'at •force, and the sea running 'was very high. On three occasions the barqluentine heeled over to such an extent that the sea broke on the decks, and for a time it was feared by those on tyoard tho .tug that the' sailing vessel would never reach i port iu safety. On. arrivaL at Mer- j cury Bay, Captain Owens and the officers of the Pendie Hill told tho -- master of the tug boat that they \ had never been through such bioister- ■ ous weather before.
