FINANCIAL DEBATE.

A NO-CONFIDENCE MOTION ON NEWTOWN LICENSES.

'ALLEGED INTERFERENCE WITH POLICE.

Per Press Association^ WELLINGTON, last night. On the House of Representatives resuming at 7.30 to-night, Sir William Russell started the Financial debate. He maintained that not only should we refrain from borrow-

ing at the rate proposed, but the outlook for the future required very grave consideration. During the next year or so loans would- be falling in, and as we could not go on to the home market, locai financial institutions would compel us +o renew them at a higher rate of interest.

Mr Taylor moved, as an amendment, “ That this House is of op-

inion 'that the interference of the Executive with the right of the police to seek the enforcement of the licensing law in Newt-own electorate is unjustifiable, and subversive of popular rights and liberties.”

Mr Seddon said that he had no alternative but to accept this as a no-confidence motion.

Mr McGowan declared that there had been no interference with" the police, and he urged that it was not fair to have the case agjainst these hotelkeepers decided while the question of their licenses is still subjudice..

The debate is proceeding, but it is expected that the vote on the noconfidence motion will be taken befor the House rises.

AMENDMENT REJECTED BY MAJORITY OF 20.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, midnight. The debate on Mr Taylor’s amendmenl was finished at 11.20, when it was negatived by 43 to 23. The debate on the Budget was then continued by Mr Herdman.
