ALLEGED CRUELTY.

In the Magistrate’s Court this morning Charles and Alice Hankins were charged on remand with wilfully neglecting the child Charles Leonard Leaman in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering. The evidence accorded with the statements of Sub-Inspector Dwyer when the ease was previously before the. Court. An attempt was made by counsel for the defence to show in cross-examination that the child was put in an outhouse to sleep because of its dirty habits. The matron of the Samaritan Home, where the child had been for the last seven days, stated that he had not exhibited dirty habits. Photographs wore put in showing the inflamed state of the boy’s feet from aggravated chilblains whon ho was found by the police, and medical evidence was called to the same point. The child stated he was not ill-treated except for being pub in the outhouse on cold, frosty nights. Accused reserved their defence, and were committed to trial, bail being allowed in each case to tho amount of £SO, and two securities of £25. Sub Inspector Dwyer will apply to have tho child committed to the industrial home.
