HOCKEY.

WEST END V. CITY,

(By “ Bully Off.”)

Supporters of-hockey must havo been pleased at the game on Thursday afternoon, it being fairly fast from the start, and some good individual play indulged in. K. Campbell -made his debut in the hoekoy field for West End, and shows groat promise. But for the too frequent “ sticks ” the game would rank as one of the best played this season, and the win for West End was evidently a popular one as evidenced by the vociferous applause accorded them by the spectators, of whom there were a goodly number. On the lino out it was apparent West End would give a good account of themselves, being represented by Lewis, Bushnell, Wepiha, Somervell, Douglas, Clarke, Potaka, K. Campbell, Wi Friday, Kohero, Poananga,' whilst City had their usual team, composed of as follows : Doyle (2), G. Dines, Clements, Coleman, Delamere, Sargisson, Martin, Tanner, Jarman, and McClure.

The game started very fast on both sides, and it was expected that after the fine display given on the previous Thursday against Kia-Kaha, tho City team would prove victorious ; the City team, howevor, seemed to be over-confident, and made somo glaring mistakes, indulging in speculative hitting, instead of stopping the ball, Coleman being the chief culprit. The result was that Campbell was enabled to score three times in succession before City pulled themselves together, when Jarman scored, after which Kohere added another point to West End’s credit, and at half-time tho scores stood—West End 4, City 1. On resuming the game was very faßt, City striving to equalise, but too much individual play was indulged in on both sides, and, although an excellent game to watch from a spectator’s point of view, they sadly lacked combination. West End added two more goals, which should have been easily stopped (Kohere 1, Lewis 1), and City gaining a like number (Jarman 1, Martin 1), the game ended in favor of West End by 6 goals to 3. Mr L. Maude officiated as referee in his usual impartial manner, and gave every satisfaction, boing ably assisted on the lines by Messrs Evans and Hay. It is pleasing to note the interest takon in hookey by local footballers, and its being on a “ par ” as regards science, should enable them to form a strong team j as Poverty Bay representatives for future occasions. Those most prominent for West End were Campbell, Wepiha, Poananga, Wi Friday, and Kohere. City’s host being Martin, Delamere, Sargisson, McClure, and.
