EAST COAST MOUNTED RIFLES' BALL.
A BRILLIANT SUCCESS.
Tho members of the East Coast Mounted Rifles Corps are to be congratulated upon the great success that attended their annual ball held in Messrs Williams and Kettle's wool-shed last evening. Notwithstanding tho inclement state of the weather there was a large and representative attendance, upwards of a hundred and fifty couples being present, and the gathering was admitted by all present to be the most successful function of the kind yet held in Gisborne. The members of the company spared no pains to make the ball a success, one and all working most assiduously towards that end. The decorations were far in advance of anything previously attempted, and excited general admiration. Strings of flags and bannerettes crossed and recrossed one another overhead, whilst all round the hall there was ono blaze of color resulting from the hundred and one flags and patriotic emblems that covered the walls. Mirrors were placed at intervals and formed a pleasing contrast. The ballroom was brilliantly lighted with incandescent burners, specially put in by the Gisborne Gas Company, and the scene whilst dancing was going on was a particularly animated one. In the centre of ibe floor a stand had been erected for the musicians, so that the music was heard to advantage from all parts of the room. The supper room was most artistically arranged, the tablos were most beautifully decorated, and there was ample room for the whole of the dancers at one sitting. The viands, which were of a most recherche order, were provided by Mr J. Craig. Tho waiting was done by a number of members of the company, who wore untiring in their efforts to promote the comfort of the guests. The following comprised the Committee Captain Colebourne, Lieuts. Beere, Tombleson, Sergeant-Major Evans, Q.M.Sergeant Zachariah, Sergeants Pirio and Zachariah, Corporals Oate3, Witters, and Matthews, Troopers Leslie, R. Parker, and Carter ; M.C.’s, Lieut. Beere, SergeantMajor Evans, Q.M.-Sorgeant Zachariah, Sergts. Fairlie, Hamilton, and Zachariah, Corporal Oates, Bugler L. Sherrill. The hon. secretary, Sergt.-Major Evans, and Q.M.-Sergeant Zachariah are deserving of special mention for the energetic manner in which they worked, and to their efforts was in a great measure due the great success of the ball.
