There has for some time past been an illusion among a great portion of the public, fostered largely by the utterances of Mr Seddon, that to be a New Zealander is to command success, that the name “ New Zealand ” is sufficient to throw open all portals in England. Probably it was on this supposition that the band debentures were disposed of. If so, the result of the tour will do a service in destroying the illusion, and reminding us that the British public will not pay for mere sentiment. It will only pay for what there is a dearth of in England, and would probably extend the heartiest welcome to a band of Maori haka dancers. We feel sorry for the promoters of the band on account of their disappointment, and especially for the conductor, Mr Herd, who is a thorough musician, and has undoubtedly done his best for the success of the tour.— Christchurch frees.
