A solemn dirge, occasioned by the death of the Pope, was chanted at St. Patrick’s Cathedral last night, in the presence of Bishop Lenihan and a large gathering of priests and laity. A panegyric was given by Dean I-lackett.
A meeting of shop as istants decided to approach the Premier and Auckland members to advocate a compulsory Saturday half-holiday. The gold returns from Auckland district for the past three weeks totalled £62,992.
THE BORROWING MANIA. HAWERA, last night. At a meeting held at Manaia against the New Plymouth harbor loan proposals, laddressed by Messrs Maxwell and McLean, members ol the Board, resolutions antagonistic to the proposals were passed, and a branch of the so-called Harbor Defence League was formed. A meet-, ing was also held at K'aponga. WELLINGTON ITEMS* WELLINGTON, last night.

A requiem mass for the late Pope [was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church this morning. .There was a large attendance of members of all denominations, i; The church was draped in black, with appropriate texts.
