A solemu Requiem Mass for the Pope was celebrated throughout tho Commonwealth yesterday, except at Sydney, where the service will be held on Thursday.
FEDERAL BUDGET. Melbourne, July 29. The total expenditure last year was £3,901,000. or jg-350,000 loss than estimated. The Parliamentary vote was increased by 1-80,000, chiefly duo to the cost of prep aring for the next general election. Defence cost J 6779,000, while jE62,000 less is asked this year. It is estimated that the total expenditure this year will be £4,320,000.
STATE DEBTS. MELBOURNE, July 29. The Treasurer 'hopes to hold a con* fereneo of State Treasurers soon on the question of taking over State debts. THE CABLES. MELBOURNE, July 29. The debate on the motion to ratify the agreement with the Eastern Extension Company has commenced.
