On Thursday evening heavy rain from the South set in, and continued until Saturday morning. On Friday morning several of the river crossings were unfordable, and there was no appearance of the mail carrier. The Morere-Gisborne road, although fairly good in parts, is not now a safe route for wheeled traffic. There are numerous obstructions on the road, in tho shape of logs, small landslips, etc., and in several places deep ruts have scoured out, owing to the water-tables being blocked ; and mud also abounds, axle-deep.
