A SOUTHLAND SENSATION.
HOTELKEEPRS BEFORE THE COURT,
Per Press Association* INVERCARGILL, last night. 'At the Police Court Mr McCarthy, S.M., fined John Robertson, licensee o£ the Junction Hotel, £5, with costs, £6 12s, lor supplying licpltor to an intoxicated person, Bernard Mullan, who fell from an upstairs bedroom window of the hotel and died from his injuries. Archibald McCaughlan, licensee of the Mcssburn Hotel, lor supplying an intoxicated person, was fined £2 and costs, £2O 16s. The proceedings arose out of the death of a farm laborer named Barnett, who fell from a cart and was Killed. In the former case Mr Stout asked ' • that the fine be increased to allow v of a revision of the evidence. The Magistrate said that he had considered the recent remarks of the Chief Justice, and to increase the fine to allow of a rehearing would simply open the door to perjury. He refused the application, stating that some of the witnesses had only told j the truth after pressure.
