MATAWHERO SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the Matawhero School Committee was held on Saturday evening, there beiDg present: Messrs R. W. Image (Chairman),. M. G. Nasmith, 0. E.ißartram, Russell, T. O’Donnell, T. Hay, and G. Brocklebank. A letter was received from the Education Board, stating that Miss Lang had been appointed pupil teacher to the school. The Education Board also wrote that they could not entertain the proposal for a side school at the .Willows, that the : state of their funds would not allow them to build such a school. The Headmaster reported that the average attendance for the month had been 93 out of 113. He also recommended certain works to be undertaken,—Report adopted. The Visiting Committee (Messrs Nasmith and Brocklebank) reported in regard to a number of necessary works, their recommendations being adopted. Tbe Committee decided to ask tbe Board to erect a new residence for the master and the granting of house allowance till a new residence be erected, also that the Board be urged to renovate the infant schoolroom and do all necessary work. Mr Nasmith brought up the question of tbo liability inourred by the Committee under the Workmen’s Compensation Act, should an employee be injured while doing his duties. He stated he understood that each individual member of the Committee would be liable. It was a serious position, and the opinion of the Education Board should be obtained on the matter. Messrs Bartram and Hay also considered the matter serious, and it was resolved to bring the matter under the notice of the Edueation Board. It was decided, on the proposition of Mr Hay, to hold a concert and dance in the schoolroom on Thursday, September 3rd, the price of tickets to be — concert, adults Is, ohildreb 6d; dance, gents 2s 6d, ladies free, refreshments to be provided. Messrs Hay, Brocklebank, and Nasmith were authorised to make all arrangements. Messrs Image (chairman) and Russell tendered their resignations as committeemen, which were accepted with regret. On the proposition of Mr Hay, seconded by Mr Brocklebank, Mr Nasmith was appointed chairman. Messrs Brocklebank and Hay were appointed a Visiting Committee for tbe ensuing month. ,
