The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, JULY 23, 1903.

The adjourned special meeting of the Farmers’ Olub will be held on Saturday. At the Police Court yesterday morning a first offender was convicted of drunkenness and discharged. There was a large attendance at the Empire Skating Rink last evening, when a most enjoyaoie time was spent. An impounding notice in connection with the Gisborne pound appears in this issue.

Telegrams from South Australia and Western Australia are being delayed by interruptions to lines.. Captain Edwin telegraphed yesterday : Gale from between north-east,and north and north-west, glass fall, tides good, sea considerable, expeot much rain. When the King and Queen reached Dublin, an enthusiastic woman broke through the cordon of guards and olasped the Queen’B hand. In connection with the Gisborne Poultry Club's show special trains will run from Gisborne and Kaitaratahi as advertised.

Mr David DeCosta, who for many years has been on the staff of Messrs Common Shelton and Co., left by the Westralia last evening for Wellington, where he has reived an appointment. Mr DeCosta is very esteemed in Gisborne, and his many will heartily wish him the full measure of anccess to whioh his high ability entitles him.

Tucker offered the sum of £5 t? t" 8 Hospital if the railway was opened to the Karaka before June next, the challenge being accepted by His Worship the Mayor. The contractor for the Kaitaratahi bridge expects to be through with his work before March next, and as the tunnel should be completed by that time the Mayor should be an easy winner. The Poultry Show which opens to-mor-row is an assured success. A Times message received at midnight last night states that the Totalisa*or Abolition Bill was killed by a big majority, 34 to 14. A meeting will be held to-night to protest against objectionable clauses in the Shop Hours Bill. Mr W. S. McCredie, the popular Gisborne football enthusist, is booked for a heavy programme on Saturday next. The Poverty Bay Rugby Union recently appointed him one of the three selectors to pick the junior representative team, the final trial match for which will be played on Saturday afternoon next. At its meeting on Monday night last, the local union appointed him referee for the Huia v. West End senior match on Saturday next, while he is billed to appear at Tolago Bay at the same day and dour as referee in the Tolago-Waipiro match. Were it possible to be in three places at once, Mr McCredie is just the man to fulfil the order with credit to hinaelf and satisfaction to everyone else; but, not being a conjuror, he has decided to accept the invitation to act as referee in Tolago, and the Tolago and Waipiro players will have the ; pleasure of playing next Satutday under one who is giving promise of developing 1 into that rare species of the genus homo — a thoroughly competent Rugby football referee.

A meeting of the Girls’ Hockey Club was held in Holy Trinity Sunday Schoolroom yesterday afternoon to select a team to represent Gisborne against the Napier representative team, at Napier. The meeting met with great success, and the following were selected as representatives : Goal-keeper, M, Beere \ b/**ss, F. and N. Sampson ; halves, T..?lwall, Wallis, DeLautour; forwards, Bloomfield, Boylan, Jones (bully), Sonimeryille, P. McCredie. Emergencies : Simson anh Parsons. A practice match will be played tomorrow, when the following players will engage the representatives . Misses Townley, Coleman, Clare. Chrisp, Hooper, Parsons, M. Cussens, Harding, Wellsted, Simson. ,The bully-off will be at 2.30 sharp. The coach for the representatives, Mr Friday, will probably accompany the team. The Napier team is no>teo. for its invincibility, and it is hoped that the Gisborne team will make a good stand against them.
