ACCIDENT TO NIWARU.
[THE STEAMER BEACHED TO PREVENT SINKING.
(Per Press Association.) NAPIER, last night. The Niwaru is supposed to have ' touched on a rock half a mile to the south-ease of the breakwater, on which there is supposed to he -Shit of water at low tide. She has been •brought into the harbor under the Ihe of the breakwater, ' where the cargo in No. 4 hold'will jc discharg- ' C d. Until that is done, it is impossible to tell .the extent of the damage, but the steamer is still making. . [water. . / The cargo in No. 4 hold is con signed to Napier and Wellington. Some persons who were in the vicinity of the breakwater when the Niwaru was entering the harbor last evening state that the steamer came dangerously closer in to _ the shore near the breakwater, and here she took the ground. .' There is, now four feet of water in the hold. , , ... AUCKLAND, last night._ Heather and Co., agents for the Niwaru, have received the following .wire : “ Damage confined to the No. 4 hold. Do not anticipate great damage to the Auckland shipments. The Niwaru shipped here for. Lon-, don 2000 cases of gum, 150 bales or wool, 25 tons of tallow, 50 tons ol concentrates, 50 tons of flax, and a largo quantity ol pearl shell. WELLINGTON, yesterday. The Underwriters’ Association received a telegram stating that the <? steamer Niwaru, which struck a rock at Napier, was filling quickly, and had four feet of water in the hold, and to prevent her sinking, she wao ■beached. The whole of the Wellington cargo, including spring drapery for city houses, is reported to be seriously damaged. ■ Centrifugal pumps and other appn ances go North by, the Taraweraytoday.
.TWENTY-SIX FEET OF, WATER - IN HOLD. (Per Press Association.) NAPIER, last nightThe Niwaru has at present 26 feet of water in her No. 4 hold, but she is in a good position. Arrangements have been made for a number of centrifugal pumps, which when placed in position, Will be able to discharge 3000 'gallons, per hour. H is believed the whole of the Welling ton cargo is seriously damaged. A magisterial inquiry will shortly, be held ‘ WELLINGTON, last night- , .Three powerful pumps were shipped to Napier this evening, for use on board the steiftner Niwaru.
