A SERIOUS ASSAULT.
(Pec Press Association.). Wellington, last night. John and James Thorp were today committed for trial for committing an aggravated assault upon one Charles Guroke, a cabman. SHOOTING SEASON. 'A deputation from the Acclimatisation Societies Conference waited on Sir Joseph Ward to-day, and placed before him the resolutions carried at Saturday’s meeting. Sir Joseph Ward, in reply, ■ said it was intended to fix the period for shooting game from May 1 to July 1. The December shooting season would commence on December 1 and end on March 1. The fishing season would be changed from October Ito April 15. The necessity ol arranging more seasonable dates lor Otago and Southland would be considered. LAND SETTLEMENT.
.The Minister for Lands states that if arrangements for the acquisition of Mount Vernon Estate, in Hawked •Bay; cannot he made with the owners the question of price will have to be settled by the Compensation Court. It is intended to endeavor to come ■ to an agreement as soon as possible with the lessees of the Tamaki 1 block, Dannevirkc, 31,0(J0 acres, which will be thrown open for settlement. The Government Veterinary Department has been advised of what is believed" to be an outbreak of anthrax at Pukekohe, Auckland. In connection with the annual prize medal firing, it has been discovered that Private J. F. Smith’s score of 110 was beaten by one point by Private R. M. Harding, of the Blenheim Rifles, who j thus secures the gold medal for the best ~- shot in the South Island. News has been received that a man named Thos. Reid, a storekeeper at :" Mangatainoka, was accidentally shot in the leg yesterday by Constable Shearch. The injured man subsequently died in Pahiatua Hospital.
