SLY GROG SELLING.
A NOVEL DEFENCE,
By Telegraph—Press Thames, last night. At the result of a raid by the police of an alleged sly grog shop in Tairua district, thirty miles from Thames, two men were charged with selling liquor without a license. Evidence was given that the sale was witnessed by the police, who seized ten cases of beer. They found over, 100 dozen empty bottles. The defence was that miners in the district sent orders for cases to Auckland, and used the place as a depositing ground. When the police came they had not had time to remove the cases to the proper destinations. The charge against one man was dismissed.
Hayes was fined, including costs, £35. The major portion of the liquor was confiscated. The Magistrate, Mr Bush, said that for the next offence no fine would be inflicted; accused would be sent to gaol. Greymouth, last night. At the Court this morning A. Laurenson was convicted and fined £SO for sly grog Belling. A number of licensing cases were heard, convictions being recorded in two iostances, while another charge is now being heard.
