GISBORNE-MOTU RAILWAY.

THE SURVEY FROM TE KARAKA,

Yesterday the Secretary of the Gisborne Railway .League received the following communications in response to the petition forwarded to Wellington asking for exploration of the route from Te Karaka to Motu:—

The Hon. James Carroll telegraphed : " I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 29th ult., enclosing a petition from the Mangatu. settlers, requesting the exploration of the extension of the Te Karaka railway via Mangatu, and in reply to state that I have had pleasure in forwarding the petition for the consideration of the Hon. Minister for Public Works. I am, however, glad to be able to state that the wishes of the Mangatu settlers in this | matter have been anticipated, the Minister having already given instructions for the exploration of the line to Motu. Important work of this kind, which is sure to prove an immense advantage to the district, and a benefit to the colony, will always receive my hearty sympathy and support.” The Under-Secretary for Publio Works wrote :—“ Your letter of the 29th ult. to the Hon. J. Carroll, covering petition with reference to the extension of the above railway via Mangatu ha 3 been referred to this Department, and I am directed by the Minister of Public Works to inform you that the construction of the railway to Karaka is already actively in progress, and the survey of the extension beyond that point is just about to be commenced.— Yours, etc.,’ H. J. H. Blow.”
