The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, JULY 15, 1903. WAIMATA VALLEY ROAD.
If one were'' asked to name the .worst road in the district he would Without hesitation fix on the Waimata,. which certainly puts all other East Caast roads in the shade. Seeing how long the Wainiata district) has been settled, it seems strange •that the road should be in its present condition, and there must be. something radically wrong when the settlers are content to sit down and leave things in their present state. We have, so far this winter had a phenomenal season, but even with the little,, rain we have had the road is in a disgraceful and almost impass'able condition. What it would have been if the season had been a wet one it is hard to say. A few years ago the settlers raised a special loan, of £6OOO, which sum was spent on metal and improving the road,, but since then little has been done. The one surfaceman put on by the County, Council finds more than enough to do repairing the worst places so as to keep the road open. We would recommend the County Council and settlers to make .strenuous efforts during the prsent session of Parliament to . obtain a substantial vote to be spent on the road early in the spring. The district has hitherto had little Government assistance, and we feel sure that if, the matter were properly represented to Mr Carroll 'that the district’s claims for assistance would be recognised.
