(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last nighty ,Thc Tairua Broken Hills mine lias crushed 650 tons for £2210. The total earnings of the mine to date 'are £37,858. Mr James Archer, of Dunedin, has been appointed clerk of works for Auckland city. There were a large number of applications. HAWERA, last night. !A nine-roomed house at Manutahi, owned by Mr R. B. Hamilton, and occupied by Mr Remnant, was totally destroyed by fire with its contents. The origin is unknown. The building was insured for £IOO, and the furniture for £l5O. MARTON, last night. Mr J. G. Wilson’s fine residence at Bulls narrowly escaped being destroyed this morning. A fire was •discovered in the lining near the chimney of the dining-room, and the flames quickly spread to the roof, but were suppressed after much trouble. It is 'estimated that the damage, chiefly, by water, amounts to over £IOO. ’ The building was insured in the Farmers’ • Co-operative Association. Mr Wilson was away in Wellington attending the Farmers’ Conference.
DUNEDIN, last night, Robert Young, aged 66 years, was found dead in a paddock near a hut he had been residing in for some time, two miles south of Waipahi. There was a bottle of whisky alongside the body. He had been dead for some days. * HOKITIKA, last night. At the enquiry into the wreck of the Emma Sims, the Court found that the stranding was caused through the oil engines being stopped- by water coming into the engine room, the cabin door having been inadvertenely left open by the master. Robert James Smith pleaded guilty at the Magistrate’s Court to-day to a charge of the theft of a cash box containing £29 os lOd from the safe of the Fairfield Freezing Works. He was committed for sentence at •the Supreme Court at Christchurch on August 3rd, and admitted to bail in two sureties of £SO each: The money has been refunded.
