To-day is the Right Hon. J. Chamberlain’s birthday. Letters from “ Fair Play ” and 11 Slavey ” will appear to-morrow. Hyland’s Circus arrives this morning, and opens to-morrow evening. The Druids’ Social will be held tomorrow night, and promises to be a ■great success^

In another column Mr A. Cooper advises owners of bicycles to have them enamelled and put in repuir for summer use. Mr Cooper’s shop is opposite the British Empire Hotel, and ho should command a large share of public patronage.
At the Borough Council meeting last night Cr Lysnar made a vigorous protest against the inclusion of the item in the Harbor Board Bill referring to the proposed Borough •loan.
Another crowded house greeted Val .Vousden last night. In response to numerous requests, Mr Vousden is remaining in Gisborne until after the races, and he will appear again on Friday evening. Particulars will be given in to-morrow’s issue. The Borough Council last night decided to enquire as to why the subjeer of amalgamation was being left in abeyance, and to ask the ‘CountyCouncil to allow the Engineer to prepare plans and estimates for the proposed new bridge at Roebuck road.
Yesterday afternoon tho members of the Land Board wont out and inspected the Willows sectious, ub tho question of drainago of the property is to come before them at the meeting to be held to-day. The members-wore favorably impressed with their visit. "T
The following tenders were received last night for the erection of tho Old Men’s Home Webb and Sons, £671, in brick £711; Smith und Black, £665; McConnochio, £688; Mackroll and Colley, £567; Clayton Bros., £610; Haisman, £686; F. Stafford, £541. On the motion of Cr Whinray, seconded by Cr Lysnar, Mr Stafford’s tender was accepted. At the half-yearly mooting [of the Hibernian Australasian Catholic Benefit Society, held last evening! the following officers were . elected aud initiated:— Past President, Bro. Thos. Walk ; President, Bro. W. Hackett ; Vice-President, Bro. J. O’Connor ; Warden, Bro. J. Beau ; Guardian, Bro. M. O’Connor (re-elected); Treasurer, Bro. T. Haisman (re elected); Secretary, Bro. D. Dwyer (re-elected), Two new members were initiated and two members proposed. 11 It is said that the Gas Company will take three tons of coal at the price you mentioned (305),” said Cr Miller at the Council meeting last night, to Cr Lysnar., “ Very well,’ rejoined Cr Lysnar, “ I will supply it at the price, and make a good profit, too.” Cr Somervell said it could be done at a profit for the price stated. Will you supply it to me at that rate?" asked Cr Miller 11 Yes,” promptly replied Cr Lysnar. “ Then I will take a bag,” retorted Cr Miller, whereat Councillors laughed. • A novelty that should attract a good crowd is the sale of work and “ basket competition ” to be held in Wesley Schoolroom on Thursday afternoon and evening. A good assortment of useful articles, comprising children’s winter clothing, fancy goods, etc., will be on sale, and in the evening the baskets will he on view, and prizes awarded for the prettiest, the most novel, and the most useful basket. The baskets, with their contents, and the goods remaining from the sale, will be disposed of by “ Dutch auction.” Afternoon tea and supper can be obtained. Admission will be free.
There was a large attendance at the Salvation Barracks last evening, when a farewell social was tendered to Adjutant 'and Mrs Cook. Mr DeLautour presided, and a very interesting programme was gone through The proceedings were opened with a hymn, “ There’s a land that is fairer than day,” after which the Rev. Mr Rotliwell led the meeting in prayer. The Chairman, in the course of a ■brief address, warmly eulogised the .•good work done by Adjutant and Mrs Cook, and the splendid work done by the Army as an organisation. A selection was given by the band, and was much appreciated. It was followed by a song, “ Only Remember,’ by the choir. An excellent item was the mouth organ solo by Captain Renkall, who had to respond to an encore. Mr Goldsworthy recited “The Ruined Cottage,” with much .vigor. A special, feature of the entertainment was ' the magic lantern manipulated by Mr Goldsworthy, the views being kindly lent by Mr \V. I'\ Crawford. The Revs. Paterson and Rotliwell, and- Messrs Ppckover and Goldsworthy addressed the meeting, referring in high terms to the good ■works of Adjutant and Mrs Cook. Feeling response was made by the Adjutant and Mrs Cook, who said •they would long remember the many pleasant days spent in Gisborne. A most enjoyable evening closed with •the singing of “ God be with you till we meet again.”
