(Per Press Association.) .WOODVILLE, last night, The slip in the Manawatu Gorge is much more serious than at first anticipated. A clearance cannot be effected before to-morrow, as the subsidence is 20it deep in some places. Mails and passengers were conveyed over the slip this morning. ’ PALMERSTON N., last night. An extensive slip came down in the Manawatu Gorge last night,completely blocking through railway traffic. Passengers and mails by last uiglit’s and to-day’s trains were transhipped, but goods traffic is. blocked. It is uncertain when' through communication will he restored.

Lily Rasmussen, nine years of age, a daughter of Mr Neil Rasmussen, died in the hospital from burns caused by her clothing catching fire at the kitchen stove.

John Ross, a bookmaker, was fined' £5 in the S.M. Court this morning for street betting. William Mason Uas fined 10s, and costs £2 4s, for trespassing on Plump ton Park on May 25th. MARTON,'last night. Colonel Gorton’s fine residence near Bulls was destroyed by fire early this morning. Only, two servant girls were in the house at the time, and they had a narrow escape. Colonel and Mrs Gorton left for Wellington yesterday, as he was to sail for Monte Video pn the 10th. Nothing was saved. The loss above insurances is estimated at £IBOO. GREYMOUTH, last night.
An enquiry_ into the wreck of the Eva and Ada on Gillespie’s Beach South Westland, commenced here today. The evidence went to show that a heavy sea struck the vessel ar.d damaged her rudder, causing it to bump heavily against the vessel, evidently causing a leak.
