OH! FOR A BATH!

“ Oh ! for a bath !” runs a familiar ditty and the Borough Council last night had a problem, which it got out of in an easy way. The Inspector reported that owners of lodging-houses who had not baths were willing to provide them, but stated that in certain seasons of the year the water would not be available. Cr Somervell : Refer them to Mr Mestayer’s report. (Laughter.) • Cr Johnston said it was only a question oi tankage. Enough water fell from the heavens.

Cr Lysnar : Not much has fallen for the past seven months. What Waihirere has got would be very small. Cr Harding: I only wish we bad it here.

Cr Miller : They have given us a very uasty question. (Laughter.) Tho subject was then turned to storage for kerosene, but Cr Morrison returned to the question, and said ho did not think they should pass resolutions at one meeting to rescind them at the next. Cr Somervell proposed that the Council should adhere to its resolution. The Council was doing all it could to get the water.

Cr Lysnar seconded the motion. If people could not get water for baths from tanks they could get it by wells. Cr Whinray opposed the motion as unreasonable. It might seem as if he were encouraging dirt, but ho cousidered the proposal arbitrary. Some of the boardinghouse keepers had hardly room to swing a oat, and wore under great difficulties. They had a beautiful beach, which was better than any baths. They should leave the matter iu abeyance. The motion was carried, being opposed by the Mayor and Cr Whinray.
