HOOKEY.

A most interesting game of hockey was played yesterday afternoon on the Victoria Domain between the Kia Kaba and West End Clubs. There was a fair attendance of spectators, and those presont were troated to a good game. The beautiful eool atmosphere of the afternoon was taken full advantage of by the players, and considerably added to the vigor of the contest. The game opened with fast open play. West End having the advantage of the sun made things pretty lively, and pressed Kia Kaha for some time until Maude got the ball and with his usual fast play had

1 the West Endera in an awkard position. 1 However, the sapient Wepiha, was not to be beaten, and with his full force, sent the ball well down the field. Kohere followed up, and succeeded by a piece of clever navigation, in passing the Kia Kaha’s back, but unfortunately made a rather bad 1 hit for the goal. Upon resuming Kia Kaba took the ball into West End’s quarters, and Maude had hard luck in not scoring. Even play followed until the ond of the spell. The second spell opened with some fast work, both teams being well matched, and alternately making determined rushes. Within fivo minutes of time Maude took advantage of a mistake on the part of Lewis, and carrying the ball on scored with case. The latter part of the game was made pretty lively by West End, bub they were unable to score, Kia Kaha winning by a goal. For the winners Willock and Garrett were most prominent among the backs. Evans, Wells, Bright, and Hansen were also conspicuous. For West End Wepiha gave a good exhibition at half-back, whilst Lewis was lucky in regard to a number of hits, but in the latter part was rather uusafe. S. Roderick is worthy of great praise for the excellent game ho played. He got in a considerable amount of good honest toil, whilst his stopping and dribbling were special features. Clarke played a fairly good game, but ho was not up to his usual standard, Douglas, Kohere, Potaka, and Somervell played well. Mr J. Martin made his first appearance as referee, and gave every satisfaction. Messrs H. DeCosta and G. Nicholson acted as linesmen.
